Top names such as Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, Rocky Johnson (father of The Rock), Stan Stasiak, Curt Hennig, Roddy Piper and others have had the privilege of strapping the championship belt around their waists. The knew that holding a title meant bigger paychecks and different opportunities around the world. Night after night, they would put their bodies on the line to get a chance at that championship gold.
In my time frequenting the matches at the Portland Sports Arena, I've seen some amazing bouts with the belts on the line. One of the more intense was when Don Owen flew "Nature Boy" Ric Flair in from Georgia, putting his own NWA World Championship on the line against Billy Jack Haynes, one of the strongest and toughest men of his time. The match went to a grueling 1-hour time limit draw, with Flair barely escaping with his title. What a memory!
